For my first “Around BC” character post, I’d like to introduce you to Sofia Ramirez. Sofia’s a natural starting point, since she’s one of the two main characters in the first book of the Olive Tree Academy series.
So, who is Sofia?
Sofia is a 19 year old student, born and raised in Barrow City. She starts out the first book, Apprentice, as a student at Barrow City University, but soon finds herself transferring to Olive Tree Academy for Supernatural Studies, where she hopes to gain control of the telepathic powers she’s been trying to hide most of her life.
Sofia is smart and insightful, though her struggles with hearing everyone’s thoughts and trying not to use those powers have left her somewhat socially awkward. (You might have noticed her shirt on the book cover is rather more frumpy than the usual Urban Fantasy book cover fare–that’s thanks to poor shopping choices when she attempted to replace her entire wardrobe with clothes she thought would fit in better in an academic setting!)
Though she’s a MAPA student (read that “map-uh,” an acronym for Magickal Arts and Psychic Arts,) Sofia’s favorite subject is psychology. Even as a first year student taking Psych 101, she already shows a lot of insight and aptitude for this subject.
Sofia’s something of an introvert, though not as much so as her best friend, Daniel. She’s athletic, and runs almost every day, though she isn’t much for organized sports. She’ll drink wine at a party on occasion, but don’t bother offering her a beer; she’s had a couple of very bad experiences there–including one you’ll read about in an upcoming prequel short story “River Maiden.”
You might not think of Sofia as a hero or a fighter when you first meet her, as she’s not inclined to get into altercations or seek out danger. But she’ll do what she must to take down a bad guy or protect her friends, and will do so with passionate determination. Just don’t expect this girl to whip out a sword or some flashy magick–her weapons of choice are her wits and an iron will. Those, and the set of lock picks she carries in her pocket.
